Hotchkiss Universal

Hotchkiss “type Universal” submachine gun is one of most unusual weapons that appeared during early post-WW2 period. It was announced by once famous French arms-making company Societe des Armes a Feu Portatives Hotchkiss et Cie in 1949, and was produced until about 1952. The idea behind this gun was to made it as compact as possible when carrying or storing; the intended market for such weapon could be either paratroopers or people engaged in all sorts of clandestine operations. As a result of development, the “type Universal” submachine gun was able to be folded into a rather small package, only 440mm long when completely “collapsed”. On the minus side, resulting weapon was overly complicated and expensive to make. It had many parts and probably was not reliably enough for any serious use. It was using simple blowback action, fired from open bolt, and capable of selective fire. Small number of Hotchkiss “Universal” submachine guns saw action during earlier stages of war in the Indochina; few were purchased by Venezuela during early 1950s, but there were no more buyers and production of this gun has stopped.

Il a été annoncé par la célèbre société d’armement française Société des Armes à Feu Portatives Hotchkiss et Cie en 1949, et a été produit jusqu’en 1952. L’idée derrière ce pistolet mitrailleur était de le rendre aussi compact que possible lors du transport ou du stockage ; le marché prévu pour une telle arme pouvait être celui des parachutistes ou des personnes engagées dans toutes sortes d’opérations clandestines. Le pistolet mitrailleur “type Universal” pouvait être plié dans un format assez petit, de seulement 440 mm de long lorsqu’il était complètement “replié”. D’un autre côté, l’arme résultante était trop compliquée et coûteuse à fabriquer. Elle avait de nombreuses pièces et n’était probablement pas suffisamment fiable pour une utilisation sérieuse. Il tirait à culasse ouverte, et capable d’un tir sélectif. Un petit nombre de PM Hotchkiss “Universal” ont été mis en action au cours des premiers stades de la guerre en Indochine ; quelques-uns ont été achetés par le Venezuela au début des années 1950, mais il n’y avait plus d’acheteurs et la production de ce pistolet mitrailleur a cessé.
